Your Exceptional Spirit – final chapter in our series

As we come to the end of our reflections on Marcus Pearce’s Your Exceptional Life, it feels fitting to pause on the final pillar: spirit. Across this series, we have explored many of the ingredients that help shape a meaningful life — movement, nutrition, relationships, family, growth, wealth and purpose. Each one has reminded us that an exceptional life is not built from one grand achievement, but from the small, steady choices we make each day.

Spirit, however, asks us to look a little deeper. It is the part of life that is not always easy to measure, but is often strongly felt. It may be found in faith, prayer, gratitude, nature, music, quiet reflection, forgiveness, service, or the sense of peace that comes from knowing who we are and what matters most. For some, spirit is connected to religion or lifelong beliefs. For others, it is expressed through kindness, awe, love, hope, or the simple ability to notice beauty in an ordinary day.

In Your Exceptional Life, Marcus Pearce includes spirit as one of the important areas that supports quality of life and ageing well. Throughout his work, he encourages us not to neglect the inner parts of life while attending to the practical ones. We can care for our bodies, our finances, our families and our routines, but our spirit also needs attention. It is often our spirit that helps us through loss, change, uncertainty and difficult seasons. It is also our spirit that helps us continue to feel curiosity, gratitude and connection as life unfolds.

At Alumuna, we see spirit in many quiet and beautiful ways. It may be seen in the resident who still offers a smile to someone having a hard day, in the friend who saves a seat at morning tea, in those who join together for chapel, music, activities or conversation, and in the memories shared with pride and tenderness. It is present when people encourage one another, when stories are passed on, when laughter fills a room, and when small acts of care remind us that we belong.

An exceptional spirit does not mean we are cheerful all the time, nor does it mean life has been easy. In fact, many people develop great depth of spirit because of the challenges they have lived through. Hardship can teach compassion. Loss can deepen appreciation. Age can bring wisdom about what is worth holding onto and what can gently be let go. The spirit of a person is often revealed not in perfection, but in resilience, generosity, humour and grace.

As we close this series, perhaps the invitation is not to ask whether our lives have been exceptional by the world’s standards, but whether we can recognise the exceptional moments already woven through them. The love we have given. The lessons we have learned. The people we have helped. The traditions we have carried. The quiet strength that has brought us this far.

Your exceptional spirit may be found in the way you greet the morning, remember your loved ones, offer kindness, share a story, sing an old song, say a prayer, tend a garden, forgive, laugh, or simply keep going. It is the part of you that continues to shine through every chapter of life.

A final reflection: What has helped keep your spirit strong throughout your life? Was it faith, family, friendship, humour, music, nature, gratitude, or something else entirely? We would love to hear the stories, beliefs and moments that have helped shape your exceptional spirit. Next month I am starting a new series of articles titled “THE LOST ART OF…..” so stay tuned.

Maintenance update

Our robotic mowers have now been out and about across the grounds and have been very well received. They are quietly becoming a familiar sight around Alumuna, helping to keep our lawns maintained while also creating a little bit of interest and conversation along the way. We are now looking for names for the bots, so if you have any fun or creative ideas, please send them through to Zoe.

A friendly reminder to all residents: if you are considering making any alterations to your property, outdoor area or garden, please ensure management is informed and permission is obtained before any work begins. Even small changes can impact ongoing maintenance, the safety of residents, visitors and staff, and the future saleability of properties. We are always happy to discuss ideas with you and help make sure any changes are suitable and safe.

You may also have noticed that the lawns have been slower growing over the winter months, with some areas showing yellowing or less colour than usual. This is very normal for this time of year, especially during the colder weather. As the days become warmer and we move closer to spring, we expect to see the lawns gradually freshen and begin growing more strongly again.

Our preventative maintenance program is also coming to a close, with only a few items still to be completed. Some tasks, including window cleaning and external cleaning, have been delayed due to recent weather conditions. Please be assured that these items have not been forgotten and will be ticked off as soon as the weather begins to improve.

New build groundworks update

You would have noticed some grounds work taking place around Alumuna as preparations continue for the upcoming new builds. We would like to sincerely thank residents for their patience and understanding during the underground construction works, and for any disruption this may have caused along the way.

This early stage of work is an important part of preparing the site before any building construction begins. Residents will receive a further update once we have confirmation of when the building construction is due to commence, so that everyone is kept informed as the project progresses.

Behind the scenes, we are also working closely with our new residents as they finalise their chosen designs and colour selections. It is always exciting to see these homes begin to take shape in the planning stage, and we look forward to sharing more as the project moves ahead.

At this stage, we are hoping to have the new builds completed in the first quarter of next year. We are very excited to welcome our new residents to the Alumuna community and thank everyone again for their ongoing patience and support while this important work is underway.
